“Walnut Hills is a welcoming place. We welcome all… to grow in faith together, and to serve the community and world. We have so many enthusiastic children and youth ministry volunteers, I pray that we continue to invite more persons to be a part of a wonderful church, so that we grow in numbers as well as in faith.” – Deacon Diane Wasson Eberhart
We belong to the Reconciling Ministries Network, which mobilizes United Methodists of all sexual orientations and gender identities to transform our church and world into the full expression of Christ’s inclusive love.”

Pastor Cris Decious
Walnut Hills is happy to announce our incoming lead pastor, Pastor Cris Decious, who will begin his appointment at Walnut Hills on July 1, 2021.
Born and raised in Marion, Iowa, and Mesa, Arizona, Pastor Cris has been working in churches in a full-time capacity for thirty-one years. He started his full-time work at a large church as an associate pastor at the First United Methodist Church in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, in 1990 right out of college. He received a Bachelor of Arts vocal performance degree from Geneva College. Working as a student pastor at a three-church charge, He matriculated at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 1999. He was ordained an elder in the Western Pennsylvania United Methodist Conference in 2002. After pastoring a University church in California, Pennsylvania, He and his wife received a grant to pioneer a new congregation in Paso Robles, California, until their move back to Iowa. During their time in California, Pastor Cris and his wife Jennifer started a much-needed foodbank out of their church to feed the poor. The foodbank regularly provided for many field workers and migrant families in the area. In 2012 Pastor Cris moved back to Iowa and was appointed to The Minburn United Methodist Church in Minburn, Iowa. He then was appointed in 2015 to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cherokee, Iowa, in the Northwest District where he is currently located. While in Cherokee, they have started a Care & Share Thrift Shop out of the church to help families in the Cherokee area.
Pastor Cris is a progressive and forward-thinking pastor who affirms the rights of all of God’s LGBTQ children. He looks forward to continuing to serve as a pastor who affirms gay weddings in our church, the acceptance of gay clergy in our pulpits, affirms the marginalized and poor, and does everything to help eliminate racism and promotes social justice.
Pastor Cris has been married to Jennifer for thirty years. They have three children: Elijah, a political science and journalism major from Iowa State University who is married to his husband Alex, a full-time nurse out of the Humbolt Hospital. They currently reside in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Noah, with a Business Administrative degree currently works at National Enterprise in Sioux City. He and his wife Sarah were married two years ago and currently reside in Kingsley, Iowa. Sarah works for the Staples Corporation. Grace, their youngest is a senior in her last semester at Simpson College. She is an Opera Performance major and German minor and is currently discerning the best graduate school option in pursuing her career on the stage.
Pastor Cris and Jennifer also have one Bishon Frise dog and four Siamese Cats to keep them entertained. They enjoy traveling the globe together and visiting different countries and cultures. Pastor Cris enjoys the hobby of being a fine oil painter, knitting, and singing in choirs. Jennifer enjoys quilting, needlework, and making socks on a 1908 circular sock machine. In the summer they enjoy light gardening and canning jellies, tomatoes, and freezing fruit and vegetables to share.
“Personally, my wife and I are thrilled to journey with Walnut Hills UMC in this next chapter of our lives. Thank you for warmly welcoming us through your SPRC church family members. We genuinely look forward to sitting down over meals and coffee and getting to know you!” Pastor Cris
