Welcome to Walnut Hills Preschool

Walnut Hills Preschool serves children in Waukee, Urbandale, West Des Moines, Van Meter, Grimes and Johnston. We are celebrating 20 years of blessings with young children and their families!

Our preschool provides a joyful and creative environment for children to discover and explore the amazing world God has given us! Every day the children are actively engaged in hands on learning. They discover the joy of new friendships with other children, adults and God! Their world expands in amazing ways!

It is our goal to provide a fun and meaningful preschool experience for 3-5 year olds in a joyful Christian atmosphere! We value and respect each child’s unique and special personality, needs, interests and abilities. Walnut Hills Preschool is a place where the children and their families feel loved and cared for!

Our Preschool Program

We believe children learn best through play experiences, being actively involved in discovering, exploring, creating and communicating. Our preschool environment nurtures positive self-confidence, independence plus good communication, thinking, memory and problem solving skills with their teachers and peers.

Children’s books come alive at Walnut Hills! Everyday the preschoolers have fun with similar experiences of the book’s characters. We create a literacy-thematic based curriculum. All areas of development are integrated into each day’s experiences.

The staff works together to provide a balance of structured and unstructured activities. The children have the unique opportunity to interact with all the teachers at preschool by participating in 4 rooms of interest center activities.

Our interest centers provide the children with experiences to grow and develop with: art, painting, science, STEM, strong hands, sensory tub, language/literacy, Handwriting Without Tears, dramatic play, blocks, music plus fine and large motor activities.

Trust your children are in great hands with us. Walnut Hills Preschool has been serving children in Waukee, Urbandale, West Des Moines, Van Meter, Grimes and Johnston for over 20 years — and we are ready to serve you and your family!

Families are important to us

Parent and grandparent involvement is a vital and wonderful part of our program!  We enjoy having parents & other family members visit on their preschooler’s snack days, volunteer in the classroom and help at home and on site with various projects. We comply with the DHS requirements to keep our children safe at all times.

The children also enjoy sharing special programs and events with parents and grandparents throughout the preschool year! They love having these special people as a part of their preschool experience. Preschool events take place in the local Waukee, Urbandale, West Des Moines, Van Meter, Grimes and Johnston areas, making it easy for families to join us for the local fun.

Communication with our Preschool Families

We start the year with a Parent Orientation meeting at our centrally located Urbandale facility in August. You receive valuable information to prepare you and your child for a wonderful year along with the goals and helpful ideas to encourage your child’s development. Interested parents and grandparents may sign up to be classroom volunteers at this time.

Each week during the preschool year, you receive a newsletter with the week’s events and reminders. It will also include a sampling of interest center activities, visitors, and the book question for the day so you can prepare your child for the day and also have some good topics for conversation when they come home!

You also receive a yearly calendar along with monthly calendars to give you a quick overview of each day’s books, activities and special events. To view the Year at a Glance, click here.

Communication regarding your child’s development is shared with the parents two times a year with a complete Readiness Report and as needed throughout the year.   A Parent Teacher conference is given in the spring.
